Motivational Social Groups

Social Motivational Groups create a positive group experience where the individual learns how to belong in a group by practicing related social skills through actual membership in a group under the guidance of experienced professional group leaders.

SOCIAL MOTIVATIONAL GROUPS ARE FOR THE CHILD WHO...

     • Lacks sufficient social awareness and social skills to keep friends
     • Sits alone at lunch and plays alone on the playground
     • Is bullied or teased by peers and may be shy and unassertive
     • Can be overly aggressive in play and cannot resolve conflicts
     • Frequently disrupts groups
     • Is uncooperative at home
     • Is an underachiever and lacks motivation
     • Seems irresponsible, disorganized, forgets homework, loses papers
     • Performs inconsistently in school without constant supervision
     • Cannot stay focused on tasks
     • Children ages: 10 to 18
     • Young Adults

THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
     • Activity oriented group process
     • Set individual goals for each group member
     • Teach age appropriate social skills
     • Coach pro-social behaviors as situations arise within the context of the group dynamics
     • Use a success model to build self esteem
     • Regular contact with the school and parents is a priority

NOTE: Graduation marks the completion of group services, based on a consensus of the group leaders, the parent(s) and school personnel.

GROUP FORMAT
     • Initial meeting with prospective group member and family
     • One hour weekly group meetings: after school; early evenings and Saturday's
     • Two highly trained and experienced Leaders in each group
     • Group size: 5-7 members
     • Heterogeneous groupings of children by temperament and social skill development
     • Groups include children from a 4th grade level span
     • Same sex groups (except young adults)
     • Parents participate in Parent Group Meetings
     • Classroom observations, school and/or parent meetings as needed

School Consultation and Placement

It is our philosophy and practice to coordinate our efforts, in both Social Motivational groups and individual therapy, with those of the child's teachers and other school personnel.

Consultation with Teachers: For children in our Social Motivational Groups, we contact teachers by phone, several times during the school year, generally just prior to Parent Nights. In addition, we often consult with the teachers, on request by the parents, whenever the child is experiencing particular difficulties.

Classroom Observation: On request, your child's group leader or individual therapist will visit your child's school to observe his/her behavior in the classroom, on the playground, or other school setting, and formulate recommendations.

IEP meetings: Your child's group leader or individual therapist will, when appropriate, participate with you in school IEP meetings.

NOTE: To maintain and respect the confidentiality of our clients and families, Learning Consultants personnel will not contact school personnel without a signed consent/release from the parents

Individual/Family Spiritual Counseling

The major function of HorizonMinds Consulting Spiritual Counseling is to help all students with growth in self-understanding, developing interpersonal, problem solving, and decision-making skills and occupational awareness. This is accomplished through classroom guidance, large and small group sessions, and individual counseling. The program is designed to be sequential and preventive in nature. It provides assistance and support to students in developing and implementing competencies for academic and career success. The program also provides mechanisms for assisting individuals with resolution of problems which inhibit healthy development and academic achievement. The guidance program is responsible for assisting students in developing and maintaining the skills needed to:

     • understand and respect themselves and others
     • behave responsibly in the school, the family and the community
     • make wise choices, manage change successfully, and solve problems
     • use their educational opportunities well
     • communicate effectively
     • plan and prepare for personally satisfying and socially useful lives

HorizonMinds Consulting Spiritual Advisors/Counselors serve student needs identified through formal and informal assessments. Departmental goals specified in the System Guidance Plan serve as the focus for guidance activities and counseling interventions in local schools. These goals are (1) reduction in academic underachievement and other school related learning problems, (2) reduction in school drop out rates and absenteeism, (3) prevention and remediation of emotional disturbances of troubled children, and (4) development of career and educational plans.
